Canal collection, 1825-1983 (bulk 1830-1849).

This collection is comprised of a number of handwritten notebooks containing notes on canal water measurements, observations of canals, and accounting information. Many of these notebooks belonged to Richard Howe and relate to the section of the Ohio and Erie Canal now in the Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area. Also present are maps, measured drawings of locks and bridges, a survey of the Miami River drainage basin, correspondence, and some later printed items. The bulk of the materials date from the 1830s through the 1840s.

Richard Howe was one of the first settlers of Akron in 1829. He was born in St. Mary's County, Maryland, on March 8, 1799, and came to Ohio in 1812 with his widowed mother and six brothers and sisters. They settled at Franklinton, near Columbus. Richard Howe was later adopted by Lucas Sullivant, a wealthy landowner in Franklinton. Sullivant, who as a practical surveyor and engineer, began to instruct Howe in his profession.
